Famiglia assai antica ed illustre di origine maltese, passata in Sicilia nel XV secolo e propagatasi, successivamente, in diverse regioni d'Italia. Nei ricordi dei tempi andati si leggono alcune varianti di questo cognome dovute alle solite cause della fonetica storica, della pronuncia dialettale e dal modo di interpretare la scrittura dei cognomi; Farruggi, Farrugi, Farruggia, Farrugio etc. sono tutti rami dello stesso ceppo originario. La cognominizzazione è anteriore al XIV secolo e dovrebbe derivare da un soprannome originato dal vocabolo arabo farrug o farrudja (pollastro).
