Antica ed assai nobile famiglia friulana, di chiara ed avita virtù, propagatasi, nel corso dei secoli, in diverse regioni d'Italia. Si tramanda che essa abbia origine francese e che più nello specifico che sia derivata da un esponente della nobile famiglia Ferroul o Ferrouil della Linguadoca. Occorre innanzitutto notare che non sempre la forma originaria del cognome si manteneva intatta nei secoli con la sua primitiva grafia. Spesso a causa di trascrizioni errate, di trasformazioni dialettali secondo le regioni ove la stirpe via via si portava, della scrittura incomprensibile degli scrivani etc., si avevano modificazioni della fonetica e della grafia. Ed ecco che allora una primitiva attestazione di questa forma cognominale può rintracciarsi in quel "Nicolaus dictus Firulgsi", citato in un documento friulano del 1382.
