Antica famiglia greca, passata a risiedere, nel XV secolo, sull'isola di Rodi e rifugiatasi in Bari, dopo che Rodi fu assediata dai Turchi, ove fu ascritta alla nobiltà. Un cospicuo ramo del casato passò in Bologna e venne così iscritto nel Libro d'Oro. La casata ebbe anche vari possedimenti feudali in Castelluccio (Potenza).
