Secondo alcuni autori questa famiglia ebbe a capostipite un Riccardo, cavaliere della famiglia di Goffredo di Buglione, che nella conquista di Terrasanta fu condottiero d'una falange, perciò fu chiamto Filangero, e che ritornato da Gerusalemme stabilì la famiglia nel regno di Napoli, ove ottenne le baronie di Nocera, Lapigio, Pietrastornola, Quadrapane, Poutò e la Candida. Secondo altri ebbe a capostipite un Turgisio, cavaliere normanno, venuto in Italia nel 1045 col figlio Angerio, il quale ultimo stabilì la sua famiglia nel Napoletano e i suoi successori furono chiamati con l'attuale cognome cioè figli di Angerio. Le incertezze sulle origini di questa nobile famiglia sono seguite da altre incertezze quando si tratta di stabilre chi sia stato il primo a portarla in Sicilia.
