Famiglia antica oriunda della Manta, e le cui prime memorie risalgono a Francesco vivente agli inizi del secolo XVI, che fu sepolto con epigrafe nella chiesa del monastero della Manta. Notevole fu Giuseppe Michele dottore in legge, segretario capo della Municipalità di Torino, professore di leggi, supplente nella R. Università, e scrittore. Sposò Antonietta Maria Gaetana dell'auditore Matteo Domenico Verney, la quale cercò di fondare un maggiorasco comitale per il figlio Alessandro, ma ebbe contrario il Consiglio di Stato. Alessandro ottenne con Regio Decreto 1 dicembre 1853 l'aggiunta al proprio del cognome materno. Fu sostituto sovrannumerario del Procuratore Generale (10 marzo 1840), effettivo nel 1841, e si ritirò nel 1860 col titolo di consigliere d'appello. Egli si occupò poi quasi esclusivamente d'araldica e di storia, e venne nominato segretario della R. Deputazione di Storia Patria e R. Commissario presso la Consulta Araldica.
