El sentido propio del vocablo es "buche de ave", S. XIII, y "bocio", aplicado a los montañeses de las zonas occitanas septentrionales, por la frecuencia de esta enfermedad entre los mismos. Voz de origen prerromano no bien puntualizado. Gavota, nombre de una danza, 1884, del fr. gavotte, S. XVI, deriva de oc. gavot "montañes" que a su vez procede de otro nombre dialectal del bocio o buche, equivalente del fr. jabot íd., y que deriva de la misma raíz con otro sufijo.
