Famiglia anteriore al 1300. Da un istrumento rogato Ser Santi Jomelli, 13 Luglio 1598, si ricava che esistevano allora tre rami della nobile famiglia Gai, cioè: di Niccolao, di Corrado, di Onorato; di Tommaso, di Corrado di Onorato e di Bernardino di Filippo di Onorato; i quali tre rami usando stemmi alquanto diversi convennero di usare da quell'epoca uno stemma identico per tutta la famiglia. Il primo ramo usava: di rosso a sette stelle d'oro di otto raggi; al capo d'oro all'aquila di nero; il secondo di rosso a nove stelle d'oro; il terzo di rosso a sette stelle d'oro; lo stemma adottato fu quello del primo ramo. La famiglia si estinse nel sacerdote Franceso di Ippolito, morto nel 1649, che per essere l'ultimo della famiglia portò, com'era costume, l'arme a' piedi al suo funerale: erede fu l'Opera della Madonna dell'umiltà. Il sepolcro della famiglia è in Duomo a Pistoia. ...
