Alla nobile e illustre famiglia Girami appartenne il valoroso e influente Squarcia Girami, uomo di grande ingegno e di non comune fortuna, il quale ebbe l'onore di servire come ministro e favorito presso la corte del duca Giovanni Maria Visconti. La sua sorte, tuttavia, fu legata in modo tragico e irrevocabile a quella del suo signore: nello stesso giorno in cui il duca fu crudelmente pugnalato dinanzi alla porta della veneranda Chiesa di San Gottardo, egli stesso cadde vittima della furia del popolo milanese, che, in un impeto di ribellione, lo condannò a morte. Di tale evento e delle vicende della famiglia Girami fa menzione il dotto Calvi nella sua stimata opera intitolata *Il Patriziato Milanese*, data alle stampe in Milano per cura del Borroni nell'anno 1875. Quanto all'origine di questa casata, le opinioni degli eruditi e degli storici non sono unanimi, e diverse teorie sono state avanzate nel corso dei secoli. Tuttavia, si trovano memorie certe e documenti attendibili che attestano la presenza della famiglia Girami già verso la metà del XIII secolo, epoca nella quale essa cominciò a distinguersi per meriti e virtù.
