Secondo alcune ricostruzioni araldiche, la casata sarebbe una diramazione collaterale della nobile famiglia piemontese Viretti o Viretto. La mutazione di cognominizzazione sarebbe dunque attribuibile a fenomeni di variazione manoscritta ed anagrafica. In ogni modo, i Giretto furono ammessi alla nobiltà locale ligure per benemerenze militari e civili, anteriormente al secolo decimo sesto.
