La nobilissima e vetusta famiglia Gorzani affonda le proprie radici nel Piemonte, ove ebbe stabile e cospicua dimora nella città di Asti. Il casato trasse il proprio cognome dall’omonimo castello di loro spettanza, situato presso Valfenera, e si distinse a lungo tra le schiatte nobiliari di Torino, fiorendo altresì nella medesima Asti. Già nel 1330, i Gorzani risultavano investiti del dominio su Montalto, Monticatti e parte di Valfenera. Un loro insigne antenato, Ruffino, ricoprì la dignità di console di Asti e, nell’anno del Signore 1202, fu deputato a ratificare una donazione di alcuni castelli alla città da parte del Vescovo Bonifacio. I membri della stirpe detennero, inoltre, la signoria su una porzione delle Castellate presso Saluzzo, così come su Manzoni, sul castello di Brosolo nei pressi di Torino, sulla località detta la Margherita presso Mondovì, e su altri luoghi di rilievo. Tra le figure eminenti del casato si annoverano: Oberto, insignito del titolo di cavaliere aurato nel 1201 e podestà di Pavia nel 1231; Ottone, abate dei Santi Apostoli d’Asti nell’anno 1221; Bonifacio ed Alessandro, fratelli, che nell’anno 1250 prestarono ...
