The name is of Greek origin , 'Gregorios', itself derived from 'gregorien', to be awake or watchful. However, at an early date the Latin form 'Gregorius' was associated by folk etymology with 'grex', 'gregis', flock, herd, under the influence of the Christian image of the good shepard. The name was borne by several early saints, the most important, in honour of whom the name was often bestowed from medieval times onwards, were: two fathers of the Orthodox Church, St. Gregory Nazianzene ( 325-90 ) and St. Gregory of Nyssa ( 331-95 ), Gregory of Tours ( 538-94 ), and later by sixteen popes, starting with Gregory the Great ( 540-604 ). It was also the name of a third and fourth century apostle of Armenia. The name has been traditionally popular in Scotland, where it often took the form Gregor. The name dates back to the eleventh century were a Willelmus filius Gregorii is recorded in historical archives. The surname was brought to America by English immigrants. One of the first fore fathers to bring this name to America is that of a Edward Gregory, a painter, who emigrated to America aboard the Hope; he settled in Maryland.
