La storia della nobile famiglia Hellwig, così come ricostruibile dalle testimonianze araldiche e documentarie, in particolare dal "Siebmachers Wappenbuch", celebre armoriale dEll'araldista Johann Ambrosius Siebmacher (1561-1611), pubblicato per la prima volta nel 1605, si presenta come quella di un casato diffuso, articolato in più rami e contraddistinto da una costante presenza al servizio dello Stato. Pur non essendo originariamente un’unica linea nobiliare, il nome Hellwig ricorre con continuità nei registri prussiani e asburgici tra XVIII e XIX secolo, evidenziando un’ascesa sociale legata al merito e alla competenza nei rispettivi campi di attività. Uno dei rami più noti è quello prussiano, rappresentato da Carl Friedrich Ludwig Hellwig, erroneamente indicato come Heinrich in alcune fonti ottocentesche. Ufficiale di prestigio, fu colonnello e comandante del 9° Reggimento Ussari e, dopo una carriera lunga e riconosciuta, venne collocato a riposo nel 1838 con il grado di "Generalleutnant" (tenente generale).
