Veio esta família para Portugal no tempo de D. Manuel I, na pessoa de João Francisco de Lafeitar, Lafetat ou L., formas deturpadas do verdadeiro apelido, que no nosso país se fixou na última. Era Francisco de L. pessoa de grande distinção, natural da cidade de Cremona, no ducado de Milão, junto do rio Pó. Na Itália a forma do apelido é é Alfaitati e na Bélgica, onde esta família também passou, Affaytadi. Sabe-se que no século XIV vivia em Cremona Agostinho de L., que se tratava como fidalgo que era, o qual foi de Agostinho de L., sucessor da casa e que teve o título de Conde; de Carlos de L., que seguiu o costume italiano, dedicando-se ao comércio, e se estebeleceu na Flandres, de onde se correspondia com seu irmão, João Francisco, para Portugal, e com outros parentes, para Itália, e de João Francisco de L.. Este último estabeleceu casa de comércio em Portugal, onde, então, estava florescente o comércio dos géneros da Índia Oriental, que se mandavam de Lisboa para toda a Europa. El-Rei lhe fez quitação a 16 de Junho de 1507 de 8921$ooo reais, por Carta expedida de Abrantes e onde se declara ser ele mercador cremonês e estante em Lisboa; e em 1520 se lhe passou outra Carta de quitação de tudo que recebera dos tesoureiros da Casa da Índia desde o ano de 1500 até o de 1514. Possuiu grandes cabedais e muita estimação, tanto que D. João III o fez fidalgo de sua Casa, tomando-lhe, também, por moços de sua câmara, a Brás Silveira e a outros seus criados.
