Originariamente conosciuta come de Lera, questa casata era divisa in due rami principali: l'uno insediato in territorio lombardo, l'altro in terra siciliana. Le prime attestazioni della famiglia le troviamo già nel XIV secolo, quando fioriva in Brescia il notaio Albertino de Lera. Non si confonda questa casata con la omonima famiglia borghese di ingegneri cremonesi. In ogni modo, secondo quanto ci viene tramandato, Giovanni Antonio Pietro de Lera Molinari, poi Juan Antonio Pedro de Lera y Molinari, da Palanzo, in Lombardia, passò a risiedere in Bilbao, come certificato dal parlamento della Signoria (Juntas Generales del Senorío).
