Il primo personaggio di cui abbiamo notizia è un Gualtiero Leto, che nel 1298 fu castellano di Catania e nel 1301 ambasciatore presso re Federico II. Nobilissima in Catania, Castrogiovanni, Polizzi, Polignano e Napoli, questa famiglia ha posseduto: le baronie di Capodarso (1399), Priolo (1514), Cammisini e lo Piro, Gasba, Passanitello, Castrogiovanni, e i ducati di Polignano e San Martino. Un Benedetto, barone di Passanitello, con privilegio dato il 26 giugno 1607 ed esecutoriato il 5 settembre 1608, ha anche ottenuto il titolo di Don.
