An ancient and most noble family of Tuscany, bearing a name said by old genealogists to derive from one Ser Francesco di Feo, who dwelt in that city around the year of Our Lord 1320. He was then known as Libri, and being a master of the "ars notariae", composed the formulas for notarial books, thus endowing the family with this honored surname. In the fourteenth century, the family of Libri passed unto Florence, where Ser Maffeo, son of Ser Francesco, was accorded, in 1363, the highest honors; indeed, even in 1357 he had already been elected as an official of the Florentine Studio. In the centuries to follow, many of this house were granted notable offices by the Republic, and Leonardo d’Andrea himself was named prior in 1531.
