Antica famiglia dalla illustre storia, intrecciata con le vicende nobiliari della Sicilia, terra di casati eccelsi e di lignaggi antichi. Le sue origini vuolsi risalgano alla nobile casata Vota, anch’essa siciliana, con la quale condivide non soltanto una comune matrice genealogica ma anche un retaggio di prestigio e di onore. Sottolineiamo qui come il cognome Livoti abbia conosciuto nel tempo varianti di trascrizione, tra cui "Li Voti" e "Livota". Una delle prime attestazioni della forma attuale, la rinveniamo in un documento narrante di un "magister Jacobi Livoti", fiorente nel 1511. Riguardo la famiglia Vota, da cui come detto vuolsi discendano i Livoti, essa si distinse fin dal XV secolo per il ruolo eminente ricoperto da alcuni suoi esponenti nelle magistrature civiche delle più importanti città siciliane. Un Giovanni Nicolò Vota esercitò l’alto ufficio di senatore in Messina nell’anno 1437-38, mentre un altro Giovanni, forse lo stesso, ricoprì il medesimo incarico nel 1468-69.
