La nobilissima famiglia Maffei, saldamente radicata nelle terre del Trentino, trae le sue illustri origini dal Veneto, dove fu solennemente ascritta al Consiglio Nobile della città di Verona nell’anno del Signore 1405. Un degnissimo membro di tal casato, Giovanni Francesco Maffei, ottenne nell’anno 1650 dal Serenissimo Carlo Emanuele, Duca di Savoia, il titolo di Marchese, esteso a sé e ai suoi discendenti. Questo onorevole titolo fu ulteriormente confermato nel 1655 dall’Eccellentissimo Doge Francesco Molin, il quale, in segno di alta considerazione, lo investì altresì del feudo nobile e gentile di Cavalcasene. Non meno gloriosa fu la concessione del medesimo titolo marchionale, che nel 1718 la Serenissima Repubblica di Venezia volle largire ai fratelli Antonio Alessandro e Scipione Maffei, uomini di singolare ingegno e virtù. In epoca più recente, con sovrana risoluzione del 26 novembre 1824, Sua Maestà Imperiale, l’Imperatore d’Austria, volle confermare alla famiglia Maffei la sua antica e onorata nobiltà, unitamente al titolo di Marchese, riconoscendone la costanza e il merito lungo i secoli.
