La nobilissima famiglia Magalotti trae le sue antiche origini dalla verdeggiante e severa terra della Valnerina, donde, nei secoli, trasse lustro e dignità. Illustre fra i suoi membri fu Lorenzo Magalotti (1637-1712), uomo di scienza e di lettere, il quale, avendo percorso quasi tutta l’Europa, si distinse per ingegno e dottrina, e nel glorioso anno del Signore 1660 fu chiamato a ricoprire l’alto ufficio di Segretario dell’Accademia del Cimento, celebre cenacolo di sapienza e sperimentazione. Costanza, dama di nobil costumi e d’animo elevato, fu data in sposa al fratello del Sommo Pontefice Urbano VIII, ossia a Carlo, Duca di Cesi e di Monterotondo, Generalissimo della Santa Chiesa, accrescendo così il prestigio della stirpe. La famiglia Magalotti è inscritta con pieno diritto nell’Elenco Ufficiale della Nobiltà Italiana, fregiata del titolo di Nobile di Terni (mf.). Il suo motto, nobile e fiero, recita: Libertas.
