Originaria della Toscana, se ne ha notizia sin dal XIII secolo, quando fioriva un Enrico Marchesi che, insieme al di lui fratello Corrado, da Colle si portò in Cortona donde entrambi posero la propria discendenza. Ma la casata ha nel tempo continuato a diramare ed un cospicuo ramo si portò in Lombardia, ponendo residenza nella città di Cremona, nella qual città un Cristoforo Marchesi, nel 1626, venne ascritto al Collegio dei notai. Nel medesimo periodo fiorirono anche i Marchesi di Mantova, confermati nella loro nobiltà dal Duca Ferdinando-Carlo di Mantova con diploma 20 Gennaio 1667 e a cui appartenne quel Giovanni Battista, creato conte da Carlo VI Imperatore il 7 marzo 1739 e che ha posto dimora anche in Ungheria.
