La nobile famiglia Martin trae le proprie origini da Signe, nella regione della Tarantasia, e fece il suo ingresso in Torino verso la fine del secolo XVII. Pietro Enrico, nato in Signe, figlio di Gabriele, banchiere in Torino, fu padre di Melchiorre, Giuseppe e Lorenzo, dei quali gli ultimi due furono capostipiti rispettivamente dei rami di Montù Beccaria e di St. Martin. Melchiorre, nato il 7 dicembre 1711 e deceduto nel 1789, fu infeudato di Montù Beccaria il 21 novembre 1786, ricevendo investitura il 5 dicembre dello stesso anno, con titolo comitale esteso anche al fratello Giuseppe. Quest’ultimo, nato a Torino il 25 novembre 1714 e ivi deceduto il 29 luglio 1792, fu investito del medesimo feudo il 18 settembre 1789 per successione al fratello Melchiorre, e successivamente infeudato di Orfengo il 14 agosto 1790, con investitura ricevuta il 7 settembre seguente, disponendone tuttavia per testamento del 6 marzo 1792 in favore del secondogenito Ferdinando.
