El noble linaje Matarazzi, cuya casa solariega ostenta orígenes remotos e ilustres, se distingue como insigne estirpe con ramificaciones históricas arraigadas tanto en el Lacio, en la ciudad de Velletri, como en Emilia-Romaña, en la ciudad de Bolonia, sin olvidar su significativa presencia en el Mezzogiorno de Italia. Los orígenes del linaje se remontan, no obstante, comúnmente a la ciudad de Perugia, donde ya en el siglo XII se documentaba la figura de un Francesco Maturanzio, en el estilo humanístico Maturantius, luego Mataratius, a quien la tradición genealógica atribuye la primogenitura del tronco.
