La famiglia Mathis, illustre per antichità e nobiltà, rappresenta un vetusto lignaggio piemontese originario della città di Bra, insignito dei titoli comitali di Cornegliano e di Cacciorna. Grazie alla solerte dedizione al lavoro e all’assiduo studio, già nella metà del secolo XVI essa veniva annoverata tra le casate degli ottimati nella propria patria. Suddivisa in molteplici rami, da uno di questi, discendente dal notajo Stefano, vissuto agli inizi di quel secolo e padre del dottore in leggi Antonio Andrea, trasse origine l’avvocato Carlo Camillo, giudice di S. Damiano d’Asti e successivamente vice uditore di guerra. Tommaso, figlio di quest’ultimo, ottenne regolarmente l’investitura nobiliare mediante l’infeudazione del luogo di Caccierna, con il titolo comitale conferito nell’anno 1720. Carlo Mathis, appartenente a un diverso ramo, avendo acquisito una parte della giurisdizione di Cortemiglia, assunse il titolo di conte di quel feudo.
