A ilustre Família Melo descende, por legítima varonia, de Pedro Fernandes de Almeida, o qual desempenhou o ofício de ouvidor na Índia, para onde fora na companhia do Vice-Rei Conde de Tarouca. Regressando ao Reino, contraiu núpcias com Dona Isabel Saraiva de Albuquerque, filha de Diogo de Albuquerque, escudeiro-fidalgo e senhor da Quinta do Outeiro, em Penalva do Castelo, onde instituiu a capela de Santo António, conforme testamento datado de 23 de janeiro de 1538, e de sua consorte Dona Isabel Saraiva da Fonseca. Do referido enlace nasceu o doutor Diogo de Albuquerque, ouvidor-geral da Índia e cavaleiro da Ordem de Cristo, armado em 6 de abril de 1590, residente na mencionada Quinta do Outeiro, o qual, casado com Dona Guiomar da Rocha Côrta-Real e Castro, natural de Coimbra, gerou Rodrigo de Albuquerque e Castro, seu sucessor, fidalgo cavaleiro da Casa Real, cavaleiro da Ordem de Cristo e procurador às Cortes por Coimbra, entre outras dignidades, esposo de Dona Maria Toscano, filha de Bento Toscano e de sua mulher Dona Isabel Correia.
