Secondo quanto ci viene tramandato, essa discenda invero dai nobili Merati di Milano, chiamati nelle scritture araldiche anche Merate, Morati, Morato o Merotto. Il più antico rappresentate è stato un Martino, gentiluomo milanese del XIII secolo. Un Mazola, nel 1314, trovasi invece compreso nella scomunica lanciata nel 1314 da Cassano della Torre, Arcivescovo di Milano, contro Matteo Visconti i suoi figliuoli ed aderenti. Giambattista ed Arrigo appartennero invece al Collegio dei dottori di Milano mentre P. Mansueto Merati o Merotto (Milano, 1589 – Acerra, 28 agosto 1661) fu confessore di Margherita di Savoia e poi vescovo di Acerra.
