Nobility crown MertensAntica ed assai nobile famiglia tedesca, secondo alcuni autori di remota origine olandese, secondo altri belga, di chiara ed avita virtù, propagatasi, nel corso dei secoli, in diverse regioni europee, godendo ovunque prestigio e nobiltà. Secondo quanto ci viene tramandato, tal casato appartenne alla nobiltà "Briefadel" (lett. "lettera di nobiltà"), ovvero titoli creati dal monarca con lettere patenti, una moda che, influenzata dalla prassi francese, è stata introdotta in Germania sotto l'imperatore Carlo IV (r. 1346–1378). La chiara nobiltà della stessa è inoltre confermata dalla sua presenza in fondamentali opere araldiche quali: "Armorial Général" dell'araldista e genealogista Johannes Rietstap (1828 – 1891) e "Johann Siebmachers allgemeines großes und vollständiges Wappenbuch" dell'araldista Johann Ambrosius Siebmacher (1561 – 1611).
