La famiglia Merttifogo si annovera tra le più antiche e nobili casate veronesi, illustratasi nei secoli per avite virtù e specchiata dignità, propagatasi in diverse contrade della Penisola italiana. L'origine della sua cognominazione, secondo l'autorevole parere di insigni genealogisti, si farebbe risalire alla località denominata "Mettifoghi", che si ritiene essere il luogo d'origine di un capostipite oggi ignoto alla memoria storica.
