Una tradizione di natura interamente leggendaria attribuisce alla famiglia Molza origini risalenti al secolo decimo, sostenendo che un conte Molza, parente di Ottone III, fu trasportato in Italia. Secondo tale narrazione, il conte, accusato ingiustamente dall’Imperatrice per aver resistito alle sue insidie, venne condannato a morte dall’Imperatore, ma, provata in seguito la sua innocenza dalla vedova, l’Imperatore stesso assegnò alla famiglia quattro castelli in Tuscia. La famiglia sarebbe poi migrata a Mantova e, nel 1125, a Modena. Sebbene questa sia una favola priva di originalità, essa venne sancita in un pubblico documento, precisamente in un certificato rilasciato dalla Comunità di Modena il 5 aprile 1604 a conferma della nobiltà dei Molza, e raccolta dal Crollalanza nel suo Dizionario. Documenti del XIII secolo attestano la presenza della famiglia a Modena, senza tuttavia indicare condizione nobiliare. Guido della Molza, tra i Sapienti del comune nel 1280, generò Guido, riconosciuto capostipite del casato.
