La ilustre y antiquísima familia Mondragón ostenta solariego origen en la provincia de Guipúzcoa, hallándose ya en el año 1212 caballeros de dicho linaje presentes en la batalla de Muradal, victoria alcanzada por el Rey don Alonso IX de Castilla sobre el rey moro Mahomet el Verde. El solar primigenio de esta casa radicó en la actual villa de Mondragón, perteneciente al partido judicial de Vergara, en la mencionada provincia. Según refiere Esteban de Garibay, la villa llevó en sus albores el nombre de Arrazate, hasta que en 1260 el Rey de Castilla don Alonso X el Sabio le confirió el nombre de Mondragón. Así pues, consta que caballeros de esta estirpe participaron tanto en la batalla de Muradal en 1212 como en la del Salado en 1340, fechas ambas anteriores a la nueva denominación de la villa, lo que sugiere que el apellido Mondragón precede al nombre de la villa, aunque algunos autores sostienen la tesis contraria.
