La noble y antigua familia Mondragón es solariega de Guipúzcoa, y ya en el año 1212 se hallan caballeros M. en la batalla de Muradal, ganada por el Rey don Alonso IX de Castilla al rey moro Mahomet "el Verde". Su primitivo solar radicó en la que hoy es villa de Mondragón, del partido judicial de Vergara, en la mencionada provincia de Guipúzcoa. Esteban de Garibay refiere que esta villa se llamó primeramente Arrazate, hasta que en 1260 el Rey de Castilla don Alonso X "el Sabio" le dió el nombre de Mondragón. Consta asimismo que en la batalla de Muradal, dada en 1212, y en la del Salado, en 1340, se hallaron caballeros de este linaje, por lo cual parece que la casa no tomó su apellido de la villa, sino que acaso la villa lo recibió de aquella ilustre casa. Pocos detalles se conocen de su rama troncal, que poseyó el señorío de la villa, y de la cual procedió Juan de M., Señor de la Casa de Mondragón y de Ortigueira. ...
