Dom Gonçalo contraiu matrimônio com Dona Elvira Rodrigues de Valada, e desta união nasceu uma linhagem em que o nome Mourão, inicialmente um patronímico, passou a ser adotado como sobrenome distintivo. Os genealogistas, porém, não prosseguem a linha de descendência de Dom Gonçalo Mourão até os tempos modernos, mas é amplamente aceito que os portadores desse nome sejam, de fato, seus descendentes diretos.
