Nel 1250, infatti, sono ricordati dalle antiche memorie dell'Archivio di Camerino, i tre fratelli Giovanni, Broccardo e Gentile de' Muzi che, guelfi, osteggiavano Percivalle Doria, Luogotenente del ghibellino Re Manfredi che assediava Camerino. Un ramo di questa famiglia ebbe la Signoria di Prefoglio, Massa e Capriglia, con titolo comitale ma, tale ramo, si estinse col conte Gianfrancesco, nato il 24 marzo 1663. Il Lilii, nella sua "Storia di Camerino", libro V, dopo aver ricordato che, nell'ottobre del 1414, Sigismondo Imperatore creò conti Palatini i signori Paolucci di Camerino ,con la facoltà di crear Notari, legittimar bastardi, aggiunge che tale onore toccò anche ai Conti di Prefoglio. Il ramo, che tutt'oggi sussiste, discende da: Giovanni Battista, di Cesare, nato il 23 ottobre 1580, zio di Gianfrancesco.
