Antica famiglia del Regno di Napoli, di chiara ed avita virtù, propagatasi, nel corso dei secoli, in diverse regioni d'Italia e del mondo. Secondo quanto ci viene tramandato, essa discende dalla nobile famiglia Carlo di Genova - e pertanto la si ritiene rappresentata anche dalla medesima arma - un cui esponente si portò in Napoli intorno al tardo XVI secolo. Ivi, a causa degli assai frequenti fenomeni di variazione fonetico-dialettale, unitamente agli errori di trascrizione che avvenivano quando ancora non vi era stata una cristallizzazione dell'anagrafica, il cognome mutò nel tempo, dapprima in Anacarlo sino poi alla forma attuale Nacarlo. Nel napoletano il ramo della famiglia Carlo, già Nacarlo, fu di certa condizione notabile. Ciò si evince chiaramente dalle professioni svolte e dalle cariche ricoperte dai suoi esponenti.
