La famiglia proviene da Terranova di Sicilia. Antonio Maria fu creato cardinale di Santa Romana Chiesa dal pontefice Pio IX nel Concistoro del 27 settembre 1861. Lo stesso pontefice con breve del 27 febbraio 1877 concesse all'avo del cardinale il titolo di conte trasmissibile (mpr.). L'uso di questo titolo fu autorizzato con Regio Decreto 26 agosto 1926, seguito dalle RR. LL. PP. 2 dic. delo stesso anno.
