A partire dall'anno 683, la Famiglia partecipò con ardore alla storia di Napoli e dei suoi territori, all'epoca posti sotto il dominio del Duca Bizantino, in rappresentanza dell'Imperatore del Romano Impero d'Oriente, con sede a Costantinopoli. Il primo stemma documentato compare nel IX secolo, e nella Collezione Mercandetti viene descritto: "arme d'oro al pepe rosso accompagnato da aquila rampante". Un secolo più tardi, lo stemma venne modificato, così come risulta nella Collezione Mattei, ossia "di rosso a tre grani di pepe d'oro fogliati di verde con superiore banda trasversale di oro all'aquila di nero ad ali spiegate cinta al capo da corona imperiale".
