Il cognome deve aver avuto origine anticamente dalla contrada di Pezzolo in Val di Scalve, dalla quale sarebbero discesi. Esso vive ancora in famiglia non nobili della Provincia di Bergamo. Le famiglia nobili sono tutte estinte. Anche la famiglia bergamasca d'Albertone, che nel secolo XVIII, colle esazioni dei dazi, accumulò immense ricchezze, si è spenta nei Goltara, originari di Mantova.
