Origin of last name Pii, country of origin: Italy

Nobility: Nobles
Heraldic trace of family: Pii
Nobility crown Pii
Ancient and noble Italian family from Bologna, of clear and ancestral virtue, that has worldwide spread, over the centuries, with a main branch in Denmark, where it appears to have close ties to the royal family. This House, in all ages, always stood out, thanks to the prominent figures, which gave birth, in the public service, in the liberal and ecclesiastical professions and in the military service. Among these, without undervalue the omitted, we would like to mention: Alessandro, landowner in Romagna, flourishing in 1549; Luigi, doctor in "utroque jure", flourishing in Bologna, in 1553; Tommaso, notary, living in Bologna,... To be continued
in 1593; Francesco, jurist and counsellor in Bologna, living in 1612; Leone, apostolic commissioner, flourishing in 1628; Antonio Maria, judge in Bologna, flourishing in 1642; Fr. Gio. Batta, of the Order of Preachers, flourishing in Bologna, in 1663; Giacomo Maria, papal guard, flourishing in 1694; Celestino Maria, knight, flourishing in Bologna, in 1707; Tommaso, militiaman, flourishing in 1712; Benedetto, papal guard, flourishing in 1748. Other branch. Noble family from Padua, known as Pii, Pigi or Pighi. The family has distinguished itself especially in the legal profession. Giulio Antonio and Leonardo exercised advocacy in the seventeenth century. From the analysis of colours of the coats of arms we can have some information on the family virtues. The tincture red ("gules") is the symbol of strength, power but also fervent love for God and neighbour; the argent symbolizes purity, tenderness, temperance, mercy, kindness, the desire to win and the talent of eloquence; the cross is a common heraldic device that signifies the Christian faith of the bearer; the colour azure symbolizes water, the continuity of life, it is a colour of nobility, beauty, chastity and fidelity; the bezant, an old coin, is symbol of justice and wealth; the lion means bravery, strength, ferocity, and valour; the black eagle in the golden field is hieroglyph of value and intrepidity. The clear nobility of all the branches of the Pii House is confirmed by its presence in the valuable work "Il Dizionario storico-blasonico delle famiglie nobili e notabili italiane, estinte e fiorenti" of the Italian writer and heraldist Giovan Battista di Crollalanza (19 May 1819 – 8 March 1892), published in Pisa in three volumes between 1886 and 1890.
