L'origine di tal cognominizzazione, al dir di illustri genealogisti andrebbe ricercata nell'omonima voce greca "pìstis" (= fiducia, fede, sicurezza), probabilmente in relazione al fatto che un, oggi ignoto, capostipite, fosse una persona "consacrata con la fede". In ogni modo, tal casato, verosimilmente, venne fregiato del cavalierato in persona di un Giacomino, valoroso gentiluomo cagliaritano, fiorito al principio del XVI secolo, il quale militò sotto i vessilli del re di Aragona, ma, distintosi nella fazione di Navarra, nel 1512, Ferdinando il cattolico lo fregiò del detto titolo. Ma, d'altronde, la famiglia, sempre, riuscì a distinguersi, grazie agli elevati personaggi, a cui diede i natali.
