La tradición dice que se originó en la noble familia prusiana Rappen, a veces Rappe. Este último, perteneciente desde tiempos inmemoriales a la Orden Teutónica, aparece en documentos oficiales ya en 1543, cuando se menciona a un Heinrich R., luego el canciller prusiano Christoph (1566-1619), cuyo sobrino Otto (+ 1634) fue en 1620 también se inscribió en el título de Caballero de Courland. Otro Christoph von R. († 1716) recibió más tarde la confirmación de la nobleza prusiana en 1698, en Königsberg.
