La tradition veut qu'il soit issu de la noble famille prussienne Rappen, parfois Rappe. Ce dernier, appartenant de tout temps à l'Ordre Teutonique, apparaît dans les documents officiels dès 1543, lorsqu'un Heinrich R. est mentionné, puis le chancelier prussien Christoph (1566-1619), dont le neveu Otto (+ 1634) était en 1620 également inscrit à la chevalerie de Courlande. Un autre Christoph von R. († 1716) reçut plus tard la confirmation de la noblesse prussienne en 1698, à Königsberg. Malheureusement, la famille Rappen s'éteignit, en Prusse en 1744 et en Courlande en 1752.
