Der Ursprung dieses ehrwürdigen Namens, welcher im Wandel der Zeit in unterschiedlichen Schreibweisen wie Ratman, Razman, Rasmann oder Rademan überliefert wurde, wird auf die althochdeutsche Bezeichnung „Râtman“ zurückgeführt, was so viel bedeutet wie Ratgeber oder Schiedsrichter – vermutlich das Amt oder der Stand eines unbekannten Ahnherrn. Zeugnisse dieses Geschlechtes reichen bis in das 14. Jahrhundert zurück, so etwa zu einem Hermann Ratman, der im Jahre 1332 als Priester zu Kassel genannt wird, sowie zu einem Löwelin R., der im Jahre 1434 als Ritter des Johanniterordens zu Tüllingen erwähnt ist. Ferner findet sich ein Dictus R., welcher im Jahre 1371 als Sekretär zu Bregenz lebte. Schließlich sei auch einer Eva Margaretha Rathmann aus Kunzendorf im Kreis Steinau gedacht, welche im Jahre 1725 ebenda ihr Testament errichtete und dabei folgendes Wappen führte: In Roth ein silbernes Mühlrad mit 4 Speichen und 8 Schaufeln.
