In Mantova furono due famiglia Riva; la più antica godè prima ancora dei famosi Bonaccolsi Vicarii Imperiali, la maggior preponderanza in questa città, verso quindi la metà del XIII secolo. Gli attuali Marchesi Riva non discendono però dal ceppo, sia perchè l'arma da loro usata ab immemorabili è assai diversa, sia perchè la suddetta esplicita dichiarazione del contemporaneo Castelli, concorda anche con varii altri autori forestieri e mantovani come il Gionta, il Volta, che dimostrano infodata ogni possiblie discendeza.
