Diversas tradiciones genealógicas sitúan allí el origen del linaje, aunque otros sostienen que procede de Cataluña, concretamente del pueblo de Rosselló, en Lérida, siguiendo la costumbre medieval de tomar el apellido del lugar de procedencia. La casata fue transcrita de diversas formas: (de) Rossello, Rossellò e incluso Rosellò. Estas variaciones responden a la flexibilidad ortográfica de la época premoderna, cuando los escribanos ajustaban la escritura a su oído y costumbre local. La pérdida o desplazamiento de acentos gráficos contribuyó igualmente a la alternancia de formas.
