La nobilissima e vetusta famiglia dei Sanbonifacio, di stirpe germanica e di origine veronese, trae il proprio nome dall'antico luogo in cui, fin da epoche remotissime, esercitò giurisdizione con titolo comitale. Essa discende da un illustre marchese Milone, conte di Verona nell’anno del Signore 923, il quale ebbe altresì dominio sopra le terre di Mantova, Cremona e Ravenna. La signoria della città di Verona fu tenuta altresì da Uberto negli anni 1005 e 1073, mentre altri insigni membri della casata ricoprirono la carica di podestà: nel 1169, nel 1211 con Lodovico, e nel 1221 con Ricciardo.
