Antica ed assai nobile famiglia, conosciuta come Sancassano o Sancassani, che la tradizione vuole discesa dall'Alto Adige da dove poi passò sul Lago di Como, ai tempi dell'Imperatrice Maria Teresa, di cui i suoi esponenti si dicevano araldi. In ogni modo, la nobiltà della famiglia si rinviene in quel di Sassuolo. Francesco, originario di Dinazzano, studiò medicina a Reggio Emilia e, una volta laureatosi, andò quale medico condotto in Sassuolo ed ivi ricevette il titolo di nobile. Passò poi ad esercitare la professione a Gualtieri, Reggiolo, Bozzolo, nel qual ultimo luogo morì nell'anno 1673. Il di lui figlio Dionigi Andrea divenne anche lui medico ed esercitò in Bologna, Firenze, Guastalla, Spoleto e Comacchio, ove morì nel 1738.
