Derivati dai Gisla che anticamente possedettero il castello di Duliolo, si diramarono in Volterra e nell'Arcipelago grego, e dettero origine ai Ghillini di Vicenza e di Padova, ai Contughi di Ferrara, ai Scannapercora di Napoli, ed ai Moneta di Bologna. Ebbero il consolato nel 1176 e nel 1188, tre volte l'anzianato nel 1352-53, e furono di parte guelfa e quindi geremea.
