L'origine del nome della famiglia va ricercata nella cognominizzazione del personale greco "Skèmpres". Secondo quanto ci viene tramandato, la famiglia è originaria però della Germania, ove i suoi membri erano esperti e rispettati viticoltori. Un mastro Giacomo von Schembri, del fu Manfred von Schembri di Reno, fu infatti mandato dall'Imperatore del Sacro Romano Impero in Sicilia, insieme con i suoi fratelli, proprio per estendere la coltivazione delle viti, dopo esser stato dallo stesso imperatore creato cavaliere. Egli si stabilì in Messina e poi passò in Malta. Nel 1360 prese per moglie Sybilla Gatto, dei Baroni di Djar -il-Bniet. La sua discendenza si divise nel tempo in vari rami. Alcuni rimasero in Malta, altri tornarono in Messina, ove sono annoverati tra i nobili sin dal secolo decimoquinto, e si diffusero poi in altre città ...
