Secondo alcuni sarebbe originaria di Orvieto, secondo altri avrebbe origini basche, ove era conosciuta come Xuto, al pari della famiglia Sciacca, un tempo Xacca. In ogni modo, la famiglia appare fiorente "more nobilium" in Sicilia sin da tempi molto antichi e si è anche imparentata con il nobile casato Patti. D’altronde, tal famiglia, nel dispiegarsi dei lustri, sempre è riuscita a produrre una serie di uomini che hanno reso illustre il suo nome, nei pubblici impieghi, nelle professioni liberali ed ecclesiastiche e nel servizio militare.
