Ancient and illustrious noble Sicilian family, with residences in Messina, Catania, and Palermo, that has worldwide spread, over the centuries. One of the first known figures in their history is Didaco Sgroi from Messina. After studying civil and canon law, in 1629, he entered the ecclesiastical state by joining the Order of Friars Minor Capuchins, where he distinguished himself in theology and preaching. In 1656, he was elected provincial definitor. He passed away in 1673. Later records mention Don Domenico Sgroi, a master notary of the Kingdom's deputation flourishing in the late 17th century, and Don Francesco Sgroi, a distinguished Sicilian jurist of the 18th century. It is important to note that the prefix "Don" was a title of honor, used to address individuals of high social standing—wise, affluent, mature, and powerful, both lay and religious.
