L'origine di tal cognominizzazione, al dir di illustri genealogisti, andrebbe ricercata in un soprannome, basato, a sua volta, sul verbo dialettale "sparagnare" (= risparmiare), legato, probabilmente, alla parsimonia di un, oggi ignoto, capostipite. In ogni modo, tal casato, verosimilmente, godette del cavalierato sin dal XIV secolo, ovvero sin dall'epoca in cui vivevano i fratelli Martino e Francesco Sparagna, cavalieri crociati, i quali, valorosamente, combatterono sotto i vessilli del cardinale Albornoz, nelle campagne che sottomisero il Lazio, Spoleto, i Montefeltro di Urbino, i Malatesta di Rimini e gli Ordelaffi di Forlì. Ma, d'altronde, la famiglia, sempre, riuscì a distinguersi, grazie agli elevati personaggi, a cui diede i natali. Tra questi, senza nulla levar al valore degli omessi, ricordiamo: Cav. Antonio, dottore in "utroque jure", vivente in Roma, nel 1542; Carlo, dottore in Sacra Teologia, ...
